Sigitas
Baltramaitis

Sigitas Baltramaitis was born on 4 November 1956 in Vilnius, Lithuania, and now lives and works in Germany. Although raised in the Lithuanian capital, some of his strongest early memories were formed in nature during summers spent with his aunt in a rural Lithuanian village. At the age of ten or twelve, he ventured into the woods with friends and a camera in search of wild animals. The photographs may not have captured remarkable wildlife, but the experience planted a lasting love of photography.

Toward the end of secondary school, Baltramaitis became deeply interested in art and enrolled to study architecture at Vilnius Technical University. Finding the discipline too technical for his creative temperament, he left his studies and devoted himself to oil painting. Photography began as a visual aid for his canvases, yet gradually—almost unnoticed—it became his principal means of artistic expression.

He joined the National Association of Lithuanian Fine Art Photographers and began exhibiting internationally. During his career, he worked as a photographer and graphic designer at a computer manufacturing plant; as a reporter for a weekly cultural newspaper; and as a photographer for Lithuania’s National Opera and Ballet Theatre and National Contemporary Art Museum. As executive secretary for Vilnius photographers within the national association, he organised exhibitions, professional training, seminars, lectures and photographic journeys.

Baltramaitis is drawn not to spectacle, but to the quiet reality of ordinary life: an elderly woman feeding pigeons in a secluded place, a solitary child running beside an unattended pushchair, an abandoned book on a windowsill, or washing suspended above an unkempt courtyard. In these modest scenes he finds an absence of pretence—and something timeless: a humble reconciliation with destiny, a peaceful coexistence with the world.
